What are you willing to do for God? We all want to be useful, to make a difference, to be valued. But are you willing not to be used, not to make a difference, not to be valued?
Our desire to be used by God, to matter, to make a difference, turns so easily into a concern with ourselves. Egocentrism. Self-obsession. Selfishness.
And so there are times when we need to be in a baren place, the wilderness, the place where we are stripped back to dependence on God alone. Jesus went there frequently, on one occasion for 40 days where he faced the temptations to meet his own needs, to impress, and to rule with power. The Israelites had even longer in the wilderness – 40 years, wandering and it seemed achieving nothing.
However long it is for you, do not fear. For Christ to be in you, the hope of glory, that is enough.
Philippians 2:3-4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourself, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
